Our Rugged Twill Medium Field Bag embodies the philosophy that’s guided Filson for 125 years: Manufacture uncompromising products using the best available materials and construction. Products that withstand the rigors of daily use for years on end, that are handed down rather than tossed out. Introduced more than two decades ago, this traditional field bag remains a testament to the idea that if a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.
One of the earliest bags introduced in our Rugged Twill collection, it was originally envisioned as a bag for lunch, a light raincoat, and other field necessities. Its practical utility has made it much more than a field bag over the last three decades, earning a favored status for travel, everyday carry, and countless other applications. Rather than waxed canvas, Rugged Twill was chosen for its exceptional abrasion resistance. This industrial-strength fabric comes from Britain’s oldest, most storied mills, and is lightly waxed to keep valuables dry and protected from the elements. The Bridle Leather for the shoulder strap, grab handle and trim is strong and durable enough for horse tack. It’s been slowly vegetable-tanned over several weeks in natural plant-based solutions that transform top-grade cowhides into sturdy, supple, and lustrous leather that molds to the shape of your shoulder over decades of use.
Construction details were carefully considered in this field bag, even those that are not obvious, such as the Tin Cloth binding on interior seams and the sand-cast brass hardware that’s debossed custom for Filson. The sides and back feature open stow pockets and on the front are two gusseted expandable pockets with snapped flaps. The top opening is constricted to prevent water entry at the sides of the large storm flap.
