Introduce some natural warmth to your daily rituals with these sublime copper incense burners. These minimalistic works are comprised of recycled copper that’s cut, shaped, hammered and polished by hand by a group of talented makers in western Mexico. They feature classic details that will never go out of style. As they’re not lacquered, they will naturally tarnish, which will eventually lead to a beautiful patina. This is not a flaw, but a natural progression of the materials. If you’d like to retain their shine, please see our care instructions below. Pair these holders with our handmade copal incense sticks for a gorgeous gift for a friend or yourself.
Artisans
Master artisans in this region of Mexico have been working with copper since pre-Hispanic times – particularly the Purepécha people. Their innovations in metallurgy allowed them to produce jewelry, tools, along with decorative and ceremonial pieces from materials that were extracted locally. Later, this area became an important smelting resource for Spain. Copper work remains an essential part of the local culture and economy. This particular workshop consists of 30 master makers and includes both women and men.
Dimensions
Approximately 10cm wide x 1cm high, plus a 2cm high holder
Care
These pieces are not lacquered. This means that they will naturally tarnish with handling and exposure to moisture. To clean them, one can use simple kitchen staples like lemon with salt or baking soda, or a specialized copper polishing cream. In order to maintain the integrity of the finish and material, these pieces should not be cleaned in the dishwasher, but by hand with warm soapy water and a soft cloth, then dried thoroughly to keep them shiny. These holders will naturally darken over time, as is the way with copper.
